About the Play

In his play, Final Solutions, Mahesh Dattani explores the various shades of communalist attitude prevalent in the country and exposes the stereotypes and clichés that influence the collective sensibility of one community against another. The play probes into religious bigotry by examining the attitudes and sentiments of three generations of Hindus and Muslims, going back in time to the Partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The title of Dattani's play ironically resonates to the pitch of Hitler's "Final Solution" which planned to exterminate all the Jews in Europe and the world. Final Solutions helped Mahesh Dattani to become the first Indian playwright in English to be awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988.
